Johnson and Oriet Compete in Guelph

Eleven year old Shark swimmers Griffen Oriet and Nicole Johnson competed this past weekend at the Guelph LC Invitational hosted by GMAC. Oriet competed in a full slate of events over two days, including the 400 freestyle, 50 stroke events, 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle and 200 IM. Griffen qualifed for the upcoming LC Western Regional Champs in the 200 backstroke, equaling his short course performance with a 3:12.93. Oriet is the 12th Shark swimmer to qualify for LC Western Regional champs hosted by the Brantford Aquatic Club at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Complex in June 2008. Johnson took more than 60 seconds off her previous best LC personal best in the 200 Individual Medley.
Pool Sharks and Foxtales combine training sessions

Chatham YMCA Pool Sharks and Blenheim Foxtales have commenced a new training initiative to share pool resources, coaching and swimmers for a unique and motivating training experience until WOSA regional champs. Level 2 CYPS swimmers combined with Foxtale members as well as returning NCAA swimmer Colin McEachran are performing together to collectively enhance the training experience for upcoming long course meets. This collaborative approach also reduces training costs for the respective swim clubs and enables CYPS swimmers to have a fresh set of eyes from Foxtale coaches, John VanHerk and Byron Richardson. In addition, it exposes Foxtale swimmers to the typically training experience within the CYPS Level 2 program as designed by Sharks head coach Dan Stratton. Foxtale swimmers have been up and coming some time with a top thirty placing at the most recent Division 3 team championships and Jr provincial as well as age group national championships qualifiers. CYPS and Blenheim swimmers will be continue to move towards joint associations in future endeavors to improve the profile of swimming in the municipality of Chatham Kent and Western Region.
Pool Sharks complete their eighth and final time trials

Logan Nicholson and Brooke Renaud were given special recognition for their achievements at the March time trials, each winning their division with 410 points and 439 points, respectively. Runners up to Logan were Quinn Cannella (288 points), Alex Weldon (99 points) and Eduardo Romero (99 points). Runners up to Renaud were Breanna Teasdale (321 points) and Emily Pepper (213). In addition, swimmers of the month were recognized for the month of April with four winners, two in the junior and two in the senior. In the junior category, Brooke Renaud and Kelton Evans were recognized for their contributions as well as Tom Kujawa and Tara Miller in the senior category. In total, approximately 35 swimmers attended the club invitational with a highlight of the morning, coming in the final event with the parents versus the swimmers relay. Although the swimmers were victorious, the parents were all recognized for their efforts, skills and various swimming costumes. Time trials are hosted each month from September to April each season to monitor progress within all levels and to recognize the entire program. Special thanks to our meet director, Ian Mitchell who is responsible to compile and summarize each months results and score swimmers accordingly. Best wishes to all swimmers over the summer.
Evans Leads Swimmers in Brantford

Ten year old pool sharks swimmer Kelton Evans was a triple medalist at this past weekend's Swim Ontario team championships at Wayne Gretzky Sports Complex in Brantford, Ontario. The three day event hosted approximately 800 swimmers representing 42 swim clubs from across the province including the Chatham YMCA Pool Sharks. CYPS finished the weekend in 25th spot and had 95% personal best times across the team.
Evans won the 100 Breastroke and finished second in two additional swims including the 50 breastroke and 100 Individual Medley. Evans also placed in the top eight in both backstrokes (50 and 100 meter) and combined with Quinn Cannella, William Tran and Griffen Oriet for a seventh place finish in the 11 and 12 200 meter free relay and 200 medley relay. Quinn Cannella, competing in the 10 and under category finished 7th in the breastroke and eighth in the 50 meter freestyle and 50 meter backstroke. Griffen, competing as an 11 and 12 year old, finished eighth in the 200 meter backstroke and William Tran followed with a eighth placing in the 200 breastroke in the same age bracket.
Tara Miller, competing as an 11 and 12 year old, won the 100 breastroke and finished in the bronze medal position in the 200 breastroke. Miller also finished in the top eight in the 400 Individual Medley.
Canadian Swimmers Seeking Olympic Berths

The 2008 Beijing Swimming Trials commence Tuesday, April 1st and run to Sunday, April 6th. Over 700 Canadian athletes will be vying for approximately 30 positions on the Canadian National Team on the able bodied side and 20 positions on the swimmers with a disability (SWAD). Swimmers will be representing every province, territory, and region of the Canadian amateur swimming scene. A highlight of the meet will most certainly be the women's 100 meter freestyle, were Calgary Patriot swimmer Erica Morningstar will be hoping to lower her Canadian record of :54.08 serving notice that she is on track to perform well in China later this summer. Veteran Canadian national men's swimmer Brent Hayden will also be out to demonstrate his readiness to defend his world championships gold medal in the 100 meter freestyle. SWAD national team veteran, Darda Geiger will be attempting to make her third Paralympic appearance, first qualifying in the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney Australia and returning to the Paralympics four years later in Athens, Greece. Geiger was a multiple medalist in Para Pan Amercian Games this past summer in Brazil and has recently established the world SC record in the 200 freestyle. Geiger was born and raised in Sarnia Lambton and currently trains with London Aquatic Club.
Tran and Reding CoLeaders

Chatham YMCA Pool Shark swimmers Carolyn Tran and Joshua Reding are co-leaders for the top ten results to date in the CYPS time trial competition. This monthly intersquad event matches evenly skilled swimmers in five events ( each stroke in the individual medley order plus the 80 yd. IM). Based on six time trials to date, Carolyn Tran aged nine years old has achieved 1210 points, followed by Rachael House (923 pts), Emily Pepper (901 pts) and Carolyn Fellner (892 pts). Eleven year old CYPS swimmer, Joshua Reding has a strong lead with 1313 points based on his improvement, followed by Andrew Pardy (1273 pts), Logan Nicholson (1072 pts) and Matthew Cummings (1057 pts). All points included the most recent time trials completed on February 23rd at the CK Family YMCA. The March time trials will be hosted on March 29th at the CK YMCA beginning at 6:00 am. All swimmers, parents and guests are welcome to attend. Best wishes to all CYPS swimmers and parents this March break and safe returns to home for those on vacation in the south.
Miller performs well at Junior Provincials

London Aquatic Club, Swim Ontario and Aquatrainer hosted over 1000 of the top provincial swimmers representing over 100 age group swimming programs. Several outstanding performances occured including five provincial records and three national records. Twelve year old CYPS swimmer Tara Miller competed well in her best event the 100 breastroke with a 12th placing and a lifetime personal best of 1:23.65 moving up ten positions in provincial ranking (as of February 28th) and three positions nationally (34th overall). Miller's performance in the 100 meter places her in the top five performances of CYPS swimmers in the 11 and 12 year old age group. Miller also performed well in the 200 meter breastroke, performing in a lifetime personal best (3:02.16) and moved up three positions in provincial rankings (32 overall). Miller will be in action again at the 2008 Swim Ontario Team Championships at Brantford in April.
Oriet and Pepper Shark Award Winners

Eleven year old Griffen Oriet and Twelve year old Emily Pepper shared top honours at the February time trials for their performances at the January time trials. Emily held top spot with 244 points, followed closely by Brittany Renaud (203 Pts) and Tara Miller (139 Pts). Oriet had an outstanding time trial event with 446 points with second place going to Matthew Cummings (282 Pts) and Ian Pepper (260 Pts). Winners of the "Golden Goggles" and the "Copper Cap" were Rachelle Harrington and Matthew Cummings, respectively. Outstanding swimmer of the month in the Junior category were Taylor Curtin for the girls and Griffen Oriet for the boys. Special mention go to both Breanna Teasdale and Joshua Reding for their solid performances at the Leamington Laser SEAL Meet #5. The Outstanding swimmers of the month for the Senior category were Tara Miller and Dan Nydam. Miller qualified for Jr Provincials last weekend and has won 10 medals in her last three competitions (7 Gold, 3 Silver). Dan Nydam swam four preliminaries and four finals in his most recent competition winning a silver medal in one event and placing well in the remaining three. February time trial winners will be announced later this week.

Twelve year old Pool Shark swimmer, Tara Miller picked up three victories and achieved the standard for the 2008 Short Course Junior Provincials this past weekend at the South Western Aquatic's Winter Invitational. Miller qualified in the 100 meter Breastroke in a personal best time of 1:23.90 on her way to winning the event. Tara also took gold in the 200 Breastroke, swimming to a personal best 3:03.32, and the 100 Freestyle (PB 1:07.85). Tara picked up a fourth placing in the 100 backstroke. Miller will be competing at the SC JR Provincials in London on February 28th-March 2nd. Also swimming to a medal performance was 14 year old Daniel Nydam, achieving a silver medal in the 200 butterfly (Pb 3:14.47) and placing in the top six in three additional events (200 breastroke, 4th; 200 freestyle, 6th; 200 backstroke, 6th). Six additional Pool Sharks performances finished in the top six including: Griffen Oriet (6th, 50 backstroke; 6th, 50 breastroke), Ross McEwan (6th, 100 breastroke), Carolyn Fellner (6th, 50 breastroke), Emily Pepper (6th, 50 Butterfly) and Olivia Pepper (6th, 50 Backstroke). South Western Aquatics hosted approximately 250 swimmers from 10 teams at the Tillsonburg Community Centre Complex, including Nickel City Aquatics, traveling from Sudbury, Ontario.
Miller Achieves National Ranking

Twelve year old Pool Shark swimmer Tara Miller has achieved a national top fifty ranking in the short course meters 100 breastroke placing 39th overall. This performance also places her 22nd provincially and less than two tenths away from qualifying for Jr provincial championships in London, Ontario at the end of this month. Miller also ranks provincially in the 200 breastroke (32nd overall) and 50 breastroke (39th overall). These rankings include Miller's strong performances at the Western Region SC championships were she picked up 2 silver medals in the 100 and 200 breastroke and two additional swims that ranked in the top eight in her age group. Also competing strong in this meet was Ten year old William Tran placing in the top eight in three events (100 breastroke, 50 breastroke, and 50 fly). Younger sister Carolyn Tran, had a bronze medal (50 breastroke) and two top eight finishes (100 fly and 50 fly) in the nine year old division. Sixteen year Ross McEwan, finished sixth in the finals of the 200 backstroke in a personal best time of 2:30.93. Also representing CYPS for their first time at Western Regional Championships was nine year old Quinn Cannella and eleven year old Griffen Oriet. Congrats to all.
